Sculpture Made From Corrugated Steel
Ancient stones hold many secrets. Some say stone circles were built to be observatories; to better see the stars and moon. Some say the stones hold spirits of the dead. This piece titled “Monolith #2” is the second in a series of stone like monoliths made from pieces of a shipping container. The steel has it’s own history and secrets. The inside is dull when the light is off; like it’s closed off to the world. Viewers can turn the light on and illuminate the inside to reveal a nest and bat skull. I want the viewer to think about what secrets will be captured from our lives. How will history perceive us and document us.
Our studio is constructed from three shipping containers. In the process of cutting holes in the container walls for doors and windows, we were left with a massive pile of corrugated steel. What to do with it? I started cutting and welding pieces together. I pour concrete in the bottom for stability. The color variation comes from the different layers of paint applied to the container over the course of its lifetime. Each one has layers of history waiting to be uncovered.

Next step in the evolution of these vases is water proofing. So far, various attempts have failed. I'll get there!
